New battery pack green LED is ON but will not charge

Postby samiam » Mon May 12, 2025 11:19 am

I received 8 of the new battery packs with the red ends and the new USB-C charge port. 4 of the batteries have the green LED stuck on and when I charge them overnight, they do not work in any of my electronics. The LED is solid green which I understand means the battery is fully charged.

Anybody seen this? Is this something new with the battery pack or do I have defective packs?

All RaceAmerica supplied battery packs have a protection mode where the battery will turn off when an excess of current is drawn from the battery. While in PROTECT mode, the battery will not output any power appearing to be dead. Placing the battery on a charger causes the battery to come out of PROTECT mode and operate as normal.

The newer battery packs with the red ends contain the USB-C fast charge port. With this port is additional protection. If the battery pack is left idle for a length of time, the green LED will turn on indicating it is in STANDBY mode. While in STANDBY mode, the battery will not accept power or output power. Since the battery circuitry is normally alive when not in use and constantly monitoring charging and power draw, it consumes a small amount of the battery's charge. Over a longer timeline, the battery could be drained excessively, especially with the new fast charge circuitry. To avoid that, the battery goes into STANDBY mode minimizing the slow power draw of its advanced circuitry.

To exit STANDBY mode, press the green LED twice, then connect the battery to a charger for a minute. The battery is now back to normal operation.

If the green LED is stuck ON, how will I know the difference between standby mode and a fully charged battery?

The green LED is ON when fully charged and ON when in standby mode.

The LED will not be illuminated when in STANDBY mode until you try and use it. Then the green LED will stay ON and the battery pack appears dead. Normally the LED will go out after 30 seconds when not connected to anything. If after 30 seconds the green LED does not turn OFF, then it is in STANDBY mode. A freshly charged battery will turn the LED off after 30 seconds when not connected to anything.

Once the LED is pressed twice (LED turns OFF), and placed under charge, the battery and LED will act as normal and turn off after 30 seconds.

I tried your procedure and installed each battery in a T-link and the green LED did not turn on and the T-link was not powering up. I placed all 4 in my charger and it indicated not charging. When I removed the batteries, all 4 had the green LED on like they were fully charged. Put each in the T-link but same result - nothing.

I double clicked the LED on each battery pack and it turned off. I placed all 4 batteries in my charger and they indicated they were now charging. I tried each of the 4 batteries in the same T-link and they all work! Simple solution now that I know what's happening.

Thanks, we are back to all battery packs working.
